Stop feeding and discharging, maintain the temperature and pressure of the tower, and return all material taken from the top of the tower. In the operation of a distillation tower, steam moves upward while the liquid flows downward; the two phases come into contact at each tray or packing level in the middle section of the tower, where mass and heat transfer occur. For continuous operation, the bottom of the tower needs to heat the liquid to turn it into steam, while the top of the tower must condense the steam back into a liquid. Under normal operating conditions, a portion of the condensate at the top of the tower is taken as distillate, while another portion is recycled back down from the top of the tower; the ratio between this recycled portion and the portion taken as distillate is known as the reflux ratio (R). Under special circumstances, all the condensate at the top of the tower can be recycled back into the tower, that is, the reflux ratio R is equal to infinity. Then this operating state is called full reflux. What is commonly referred to as full reflux means that no product is extracted from the top of the tower; both the feed and the product at the bottom of the tower are also zero, with the entire distillation tower exchanging only heat with the outside environment. It is worth noting that although no product is actually withdrawn in the full reflux operation, this condition facilitates stable control, and the separation efficiency of the distillation column improves as the reflux ratio increases; full reflux corresponds to the theoretically optimal separation efficiency. Therefore, full reflux operation is commonly used during the commissioning phase of the distillation column and in experimental studies on the distillation process. During the startup of the distillation tower, the concentration of the materials at the top and bottom of the tower does not meet the requirements specified by the process, so it is not possible to extract these materials for use in subsequent processes. By employing full reflux, a concentration profile can be established within the tower as quickly as possible, allowing the concentrations at the top and bottom of the tower to reach the required levels in the shortest time. Once full reflux is discontinued, additional material is added and the amount of heating steam is adjusted, thereby facilitating a smooth transition to normal operation.
