To address the issues of leakage and corrosion, it is planned to install automatic control valves on the water supply pipeline for the circulating water, as well as centrifugal pumps on the return pipeline, in order to reduce the pressure of the circulating water inside the heat exchanger (it is an open-loop circulating water system; the system is relatively large, with a water supply pressure of 0.3 MPa, and the water returns naturally. The tube side of the heat exchanger should be used for corrosive fluids at low pressures, while the shell side is used for circulating water. If the tubes become corroded through, and the pressure of the circulating water is high, it can cause this water to enter the tube side, which may lead to serious hazards. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the pressure of the circulating water in the shell side. In fact, there’s no need for such complexity; simply controlling the flow rate of the incoming water and keeping the outlet valve fully open is sufficient. Since the return pipe in the circulating water system generally has no pressure when the valves are not controlled, negative pressure may even occur due to siphoning effects
You’re right; the concern is indeed that water might leak into the system. Siphoning does play a role, with a backflow pressure of 50 kPa, but the pressure on the material side is only in the tens of kilopascals. Closing the inlet valve again worries us about insufficient cooling capacity – it’s really tough to decide.
The material is iron brass; this renovation is aimed at preventing leaks.
