It’s necessary! Seawater is highly corrosive, not only to concrete but also to most ordinary stainless steels, which cannot withstand it.
The bases of our street lights and outdoor fire extinguishers were not treated to prevent corrosion, and the outer layer of these bases became corroded after just over half a year.
