It must be installed to protect the pipes! A guide support is a component that allows the pipe to move in only one direction, preventing it from moving in other directions. This is especially important for steam pipes, whose high expansion coefficient causes them to expand and move forward or sideways as hot steam passes through them. A guide support ensures that such pipes move only forward; however, it is better to install expansion joints on such pipes as well. The maximum span support for pipes, as I understand it, refers to the distance between two pipe supports that serve to prevent the pipes from deforming and getting damaged during their installation over long distances.
