If the amount of debris is high, use a larger filter to prevent your pump from running dry; many people who work with this stuff do that
It depends on how much sediment you have; if there’s a lot of it, just adding a screen may not be sufficient as the filtration area might not be enough. Generally, a filter is installed before the pump.
If there is a lot of sediment, it is necessary to ensure the flow area of the filter; it is advisable to install pressure difference gauges before and after the filter to monitor its condition and prevent pump cavitation
