I’ve been looking at materials on engineering design recently, and I suddenly wondered why the devices in factories can’t be integrated together. Although there are certainly safety, operational, and management considerations at play, I’m not sure how to put them into words. Is there a comprehensive explanation for why devices need to be divided into separate units? What are the main factors that lead to this separation? I hope the experts here can give me some advice{:1_90:}

Production facilities in the process industry involve various processes such as heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction, separation, and purification. What are your thoughts on how to integrate these units with different functions together? That production facility itself is a collection of these various functional units. Industrial facilities are not micro-reaction experiments; factors such as material transfer, the supply and removal of energy, the separation of mixed materials, the separation of materials in different phases, the supply of raw materials and auxiliary materials, as well as the safety of equipment and personnel and environmental sustainability, all need to be taken into account. For example, if the streams from the reaction process and those from the separation process could exchange heat with each other, it would be possible to reduce the amount of heat required from utility systems. Theoretically, wouldn’t it be better to integrate the equipment for the reaction process and the separation process together in order to achieve thermal integration? But in practice, the reaction equipment and the separation equipment are often not located together; there is usually some distance between them. What factors are taken into account in this regard?
