It’s simple to calculate; all you need to know is the porosity of the filler. The density of the filler = the bulk density of the steel wire times (1 – porosity of the filler ε). For example, in the case of the BX500 type of filler, ε is 90%. The bulk density of 0.16 mm stainless steel wire is roughly 2500 kg/m3, which is practically a constant value. Therefore, the density of this filler is 2500 x (1 – 90%) = 250 kg/m3. The 250 type has a porosity of around 95%, so its density is approximately 125 kg/m3. The 700 type has a porosity of 85%, giving it a density ranging from 350 to 375 kg/m3. . If the wire diameter is not the standard 0.16 mm – for example, some manufacturers use 0.25 mm – then this value of 2500 will change; in such cases it is necessary to ask the manufacturer, as one cannot rely on empirical rules in such situations. The wire mesh packing produced in our country is generally heavier than that imported from abroad, and this is because the steel wires used are thicker. Abroad, the thickness of these wires is usually kept between 0.1 and 0.16 mm; as for domestic production, I’m not sure about the current standards, but in the past it was typically 0.25 mm. That’s why such packing is heavier than foreign-made versions – quality control issues aren’t properly addressed.
