I have a question for the more experienced colleagues. As I have only recently entered the chemical industry, I have been researching the xylene industry chain. I found that mixed xylene is referred to as MX, and o-xylene is also considered MX. So, are the products derived from MX made using mixed xylene as a raw material, or o-xylene?
The original poster doesn’t know the English terms for the substitution positions of aromatic compounds. ‘Ortho-’ refers to positions on the same side; ‘meta-’ refers to positions that are separated from each other; ‘para-’ refers to positions that are opposite to each other. These terms are likely derived from Latin roots. As for the term ‘M’, it is an abbreviation for ‘mix’. The meanings of the two M’s are different; m-xylene should be written as one word, with the lowercase ‘m’ indicating the meta position. Mixed xylene is generally written as mix xylene, which are two words.
Thank you very much. I found that the downstream products of MX contain both meta and para isomers, with the meta isomer being present in larger quantities; this led me to wonder whether industrial use involves dimethylbenzene of the isomeric grade
The adsorption unit produces xylene; it includes an isomerization tower that can convert OX into PX. Our main product is PX, but considering economic factors, OX is often not converted later on
