Is the current situation in design firms such that there are many projects, the design fees are low, the work is demanding, earnings are minimal, status is low, yet responsibilities are heavy? Yesterday, I saw job advertisements; the salary for servers in hot pot restaurants ranges from 6,000 to 8,000. Many junior designers in design firms in first- and second-tier cities earn only this much after working there for four or five years. There’s little room for an increase in salary, and when converted to an hourly wage, it’s even less than that of servers. As the economy slows down and construction speeds decline, some of the previous power and municipal facilities have also begun to undertake cross-sectoral projects, further complicating the market and intensifying the chaotic competition. The design industry is likely to be on the decline in the future. Every time I see high school students still choosing majors such as materials science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, mechanics, and metallurgy, or new graduates who are determined to work in design firms, I feel like shouting at them.
