I read an article that mentioned, “Cavitation pumps are very sensitive to cavitation.” Does anyone know if there is anything special about this? All centrifugal pumps have requirements regarding cavitation; does that mean shielded pumps have even higher requirements?

1. Cavitation conditions in centrifugal pumps: Cavitation begins when the pressure of the fluid at the inlet of the impeller drops to the vapor pressure of that fluid at the temperature inside the impeller. 2. The structural differences between shielded pumps and ordinary centrifugal pumps result in a portion of the circulating fluid at the impeller inlet containing heat absorbed from the friction in the motor windings and bearings, which raises the temperature at the impeller inlet. This increases the tendency for cavitation to occur when transporting fluids with a vapor pressure close to saturation. 3. Cavitation vibrations can damage the shield casing as well as the motor windings; Vibration also damages bearings.
The advantage of shielded pumps is that, even in the event of equipment damage due to process-related reasons, no hazardous materials will leak.
A shielded pump is also a type of centrifugal pump. This can be understood as follows: In a shielded pump, both the pump and the motor are submerged in the medium; therefore, after cavitation occurs, attention must also be paid to the motor part, which is why it might be considered sensitive.
