Hello everyone: I have a question regarding distillation column operations. Nitrogen is introduced into the top condenser of an atmospheric pressure distillation column. What is the principle behind introducing nitrogen at this location? I know that in a vacuum distillation column, nitrogen is introduced into the vacuum buffer tank lines to regulate the vacuum level; but I’m not sure about introducing nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. Please advise. Thank you.

I’m not sure if there is any chemical reaction between the material and nitrogen. This condenser condenses the gas rising from the tower, allowing it to return to the top of the tower to serve as reflux liquid. If a seal is used to maintain a slight pressure, and if the non-condensable gas occupies too much space, won’t the gas that should be condensed be unable to enter? ? ? Nitrogen is used to maintain pressure; nitrogen is added to the reflux tank at the top of the tower. When reflux or extraction takes place, negative pressure is created in the tank, and nitrogen is supplied to prevent air from entering. When condensate is added, positive pressure is generated. Once the pressure of the non-condensable gases reaches a certain limit, the vent valve is opened to discharge the waste gases to the waste gas treatment system
