Design document category codes are established to facilitate the numbering and modification of such documents. Some design institutes include the design document category code in the design document number, while others do not. Some design institutes use two-digit numbers to denote the categories of their design documents, while others use English abbreviations; currently, more institutes use English abbreviations. The category codes for design documents in some design institutes consist of a main category code plus a sub-category code; the main category code is an English abbreviation, while the sub-category code is two digits.
