How long is the service life of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)? How often is it generally necessary to completely replace the amine solution in the regeneration system?
The desulfurization agent used in our plant has been in use since its initial operation, for a total of ten years now. We also have all the necessary amine liquid purification equipment (full filtration of rich liquid, filtration of 15% lean liquid, as well as equipment for heat removal and salt stabilization of the amine liquid). However, the current problem is that the CO2 content in the cleaned acidic gas is as high as 30%–35%, which is significantly above the designed value. Could this be related to the desulfurization agent?
There is no such thing as a service life. However, MDEA solutions can introduce pollutants during use, and MDEA itself can undergo oxidative degradation and thermal degradation to produce thermally stable salts or other degradation products. When the concentration of these degradation products reaches a certain level, it is possible to add new agents for dilution and displacement, or to use cation-anion exchange and vacuum distillation for purification. Those who have no budget constraints should replace everything with new ones
