What by-products are produced when propylene is hydrogenated to isopropyl alcohol?
Is it a bit of a detour? These days, most isopropanol is produced from propylene and water
It’s not that much of a detour either. In the case of the bisphenol A production process, the propylene produced by the phenol-propylene unit is converted into isopropanol through hydrogenation if there is no suitable market for it. It’s a good idea.
Propanone hydrogenation: since the carbonyl group of propanone is mainly reduced to an alcohol hydroxyl group, as for by-products, it can be assumed that products resulting from full hydrogenation may include ethanol, methanol, and even propane, methane, ethane, etc. The yield of isopropanol obtained by hydrogenation of propylene should be no less than 95%, as long as the process conditions are properly controlled.
Propanol is more expensive than isopropyl alcohol; why is this done?
Practice has shown that the by-products resulting from the hydrogenation of propylene to isopropanol are very few, almost none at all. If any are to be present, there might be MIBK and MIBC; and if more are desired, then propane or propylene along with water could be present.
