The temperature in the sulfur production furnace using sulfur must be maintained above 1250°C. When the acidic gases available are not sufficient to keep the furnace temperature at this level, hydrogen or gas needs to be used as an additional fuel source. Why is hydrogen preferred over gas? What are the effects of using gas instead?
Poor control of the gas ratio can lead to carbon deposition
Gas is a gaseous hydrocarbon; incomplete combustion can lead to carbon deposition, resulting in black sulfur. In severe cases, it can clog the catalyst and render it inactive! And the combustion of hydrogen to produce water vapor has little effect on sulfur!
