Hello, fellow seafarers! Liquid-phase hydrogenation. Does this liquid phase refer to organic materials or hydrogen gas? ; That is, during the reaction, the material is in the gas phase, and hydrogen is also in the gas phase ; The material is in a liquid phase; hydrogen is in a gas phase ; The material is in a liquid phase; hydrogen is in a liquid phase ; In these various cases, which ones involve liquid-phase hydrogenation and which ones involve gas-phase hydrogenation? Are there any relevant terminological definitions?
My understanding: Liquid-phase hydrogenation means that the reaction occurs within a liquid; Gas-phase hydrogenation refers to a reaction that occurs within a gas.
Does the reaction take place entirely on the surface of the catalyst (such as in a fixed-bed)? Another possibility is that the organic material is in a mixed-phase state, namely a state where the liquid phase is partially vaporized. Online sources state that in diesel hydrotreating, diesel exists in a gas-liquid mixed state within the reactor; when the hydrogen-to-oil ratio is controlled, the reaction conditions are optimized.
1. In reactions occurring in fixed beds, the systems are all heterogeneous. They cannot simply be referred to as liquid-phase or gas-phase reactions; instead, they should be termed: gas-liquid-solid, liquid-solid, or gas-solid reactions; 2. See where the main site of the reaction is. Materials have a partial vapor pressure at any temperature other than absolute zero ; 3. I’m not very familiar with this process; as for this proportion control, I personally think it is intended to regulate the selectivity of hydrogenation.
