As the title suggests, I want to create 5% dilute ammonia solution by mixing liquid ammonia with water. Is this process feasible? I found that in some processes, liquid ammonia is evaporated into gaseous ammonia before being mixed with water – isn’t that unnecessary?
From a layperson’s perspective, it shouldn’t work to directly introduce ammonia into an open tank – ammonia will evaporate and contaminate the environment. A closed system along with exhaust gas treatment equipment should be used. The reaction between ammonia and water to form ammonium hydroxide is likely exothermic, and the heat generated can cause ammonia to evaporate; therefore, dilution conditions are necessary.
Absorption is possible; the key is to remove heat, which is achieved by using a heat exchanger.
The storage and management of liquid ammonia are very strict!
No need to convert it to gaseous ammonia! Liquid ammonia and pure water are fed directly into the ammonia absorber; the water volume is adjusted using a flow meter, while the ammonia pressure is controlled by an ammonia valve (stop valve). Cooling water passes through the heat exchanger in the ammonia absorber and is sent to the cooling tower for heat dissipation. Ammonia solution of the desired concentration can be obtained within 1 minute. I have been in this business for over a decade now.
What is a diluter? Is it a heat exchanger? Is liquid ammonia and water mixed directly in the heat exchanger?
Super ammonia absorber: Search for it online; it’s a mature skid-mounted unit that enables the production of ammonia solutions of various concentrations using liquid ammonia and water.
I checked, and it seems that super ammonia absorbers still vaporize liquid ammonia into gaseous ammonia before turning it into ammonia solution! !

In terms of actual use, liquid ammonia makes it easier to control the concentration of ammonia solution than gaseous ammonia!
