Why are the safety valve vents in chemical plants always inserted at an angle into the flare header? Can it not be inserted at an angle? Are there any regulations and national standards? Or in what situations is an angled insertion/upstream insertion/Y-shaped tee not necessary?
Section 2.0.1.2 of \"HG-T 20570 Torch System Design\" states that the discharge pipes for safety valves and control valves should preferably be connected to the main torch system pipe from above, at an angle to the main pipe, in order to avoid the formation of dead zones for exhaust gas or liquid flow.
The flow velocity of the exhaust gas is quite high; an inclined insertion helps to reduce local resistance and back pressure
Inserting it vertically from above also doesn’t create any dead corners; it’s probably to reduce impact
It should also reduce the erosion inside the tube; over time, the wall thickness will thin out
