Recently, the black acid reuse project at the R&D institute of Fushun Petrochemical Company achieved a key milestone, managing to convert the waste black acid into metal detergent products. Pyrosulfuric acid is a by-product of the sulfonation process in the detergent manufacturing plants, used to produce alkylbenzene sulfonic acid; it consists of 60% sulfonic acid, 20% persulfonates, and 10% waste sulfuric acid. For a long time, due to its complex composition and corrosive nature, it has been disposed of as hazardous liquid waste. To achieve comprehensive utilization of pyrogallol, the special oils development team at the research institute held in-depth discussions with researchers from Beitian Group to explore ways to reuse pyrogallol waste. During the project implementation, the development team conducted several experiments based on the properties of the raw materials. By addressing the issue of harmless treatment of waste sulfuric acid in pyrogallol, they made full use of the sulfonic acid components present in pyrogallol, as well as additives such as EDTA and OP-10, to improve the product’s stability at high and low temperatures, its foaming properties, and its cleaning power. As a result, a product that meets the standards of the metal detergent industry was successfully developed. Currently, the project is carrying out industrial trial production and the promotion of subsequent products. This product is expected to be used for equipment cleaning during the major maintenance of Fushun Petrochemical Company’s facilities in 2025, thereby reducing the costs associated with purchasing industrial cleaning agents.
