This resulted in near-zero emissions of gas, water, and sludge, marking a breakthrough in the problem of gas and water treatment that has persisted for nearly a century alongside atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasification. It holds significant milestone importance for achieving green utilization of these resources in the field of industrial gas production. The gas and water produced by atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasifiers are highly toxic, have a strong odor, and poor biodegradability. Using existing wastewater treatment methods results in high costs and significant challenges; improper treatment can cause serious environmental pollution in both the atmosphere and water bodies. Currently, there are nearly a thousand atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasification units across the country, mainly found in industries such as ceramics, building materials, aluminum, magnesium, chemicals, glass, and steel, where they are used for industrial gas applications. These units produce over 3 million tons of gas and water each year, posing challenges in terms of local environmental management and energy conservation; they also serve as obstacles to the sustainable development of these enterprises. To achieve the \"dual carbon\" goals, the Coal Research Institute has followed the State Council’s initiatives for energy conservation and carbon reduction. Leveraging its expertise in coal gasification technology, it has independently developed a pressure-normal fixed-bed technology for reducing gas and water emissions, and is making every effort to overcome the challenge of dealing with phenol-containing gas and water generated in pressure-normal fixed-bed gasifiers. This technology makes full use of the sensible heat of the gasified raw coal gas and the waste heat of low-grade steam, enabling the conversion of coal gas and water within specialized core equipment for reuse as a gasification agent, thereby achieving near-zero emissions of coal gas and water and effectively addressing environmental problems related to air and water pollution. This technology not only provides a solution for the energy-efficient and environmentally friendly upgrading of atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasifiers, but also offers new approaches for the recycling of gas and water from pressurized fixed-bed gasifiers. The \"Industrial Demonstration Unit for Reducing Gas, Water, and Sludge Generation in Atmospheric Pressure Fixed-Bed Gasification,\" developed by the Coal Research Institute using this technology, is China’s first industrial demonstration project for \"near-zero\" emissions of gas, water, and sludge from fixed-bed gasification. It began operational trials in November 2023. Since its installation, this device has processed over 8,000 tons of gas water from 3 gasification units with a capacity of 200,000 Nm3/d in total. It achieves a reduction of phenol-containing substances in the gas water by ≥90%, a decrease in fresh water consumption by ≥50%, and a reduction in the cost of gas water treatment by ≥80%. This results in annual savings of nearly 10 million yuan for the enterprise in terms of wastewater treatment costs, offering significant economic, environmental, and social benefits. The Coal Research Institute has developed green, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasifiers using technologies for reducing gas and water emissions. These gasifiers enable energy savings, pollution reduction, carbon cutback, and improved efficiency, providing a path for transformation that fosters sustainable development for small and medium-sized enterprises in industries such as ceramics, building materials, chemicals, and steel manufacturing, thereby bringing new vitality to these sectors. To date, relying on this technical setup, the Coal Science Academy has developed patented devices such as cascade heat exchangers and multi-interface mass transfer units. It has also created a complete set of technologies and equipment for reducing the amount of gas, coal dust, and water generated. The related technological achievements were recognized as part of the \"Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements of Central State-Owned Enterprises\" by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, and they were awarded the title of industry-leading innovation achievements in the category of \"five small innovations\" by the Coal Industry Association. These achievements serve as typical examples of green production and low-carbon emission in atmospheric-pressure fixed-bed gasifiers. In the future, the Coal Research Institute affiliated with China National Coal Science and Technology Group will continue to promote the implementation of green and low-carbon technologies as well as their adoption in industry. By leveraging technological innovation, it will drive the development of new forms of productive capacity, contributing to the achievement of carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals and to accelerating the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries.

In the future, the Coal Research Institute will continue to promote the implementation of technologies and their adoption in industry, to help achieve the \"dual carbon\" goals. Recently, the China Coal Research Institute successfully launched the country’s first “gas, water, and solids reduction demonstration unit,” which is located at Inner Mongolia Yonghe Fluorine Chemical Co., Ltd. This marks significant progress in the development of key technologies related to fixed-bed gasification.
