2025-03-06 Recently, Evonik announced the introduction of a complete range of Purocel™ products and catalyst technologies designed to improve the quality of pyrolysis oil and facilitate the recycling of plastics. These include the innovative Purocel™ adsorbents (505, 510, and 515), regenerated hydrogenation catalysts, and modular refining units (named Rocket). Pyrolysis oil is derived from plastic waste and requires upgrading and purification before it can be used as a feedstock in steam cracking furnaces or refineries. Evonik’s latest products can reduce chlorides, silicon, TAN, and other substances. Nirav Shah, Director of Evonik’s Global Catalyst Business (EPC/Licensing, Refined/Recycling), said, “Removing organic chlorides from plastic pyrolysis oils has always been a challenging issue for the recycled plastics industry.” Evonik is committed to continuous innovation to provide responsive solutions. ” Max Preisenberger, head of Evonik’s catalyst business, said: “We are pleased to bring this development to market to improve the circularity of the plastics industry and offer refineries and petrochemical companies greater sustainability benefits.” Our latest generation of adsorbents and catalysts means that pyrolysis oil can meet the strictest purification standards for complex materials, thereby opening up new applications. ” Purocel™505 has a chloride removal rate three times that of conventional organic chloride adsorbents, and can be used for various pyrolysis oil fractions. Purocel™510 is renewable and helps improve recyclability ; Purocel™515 helps in the refining of pyrolysis oil and pyrolysis gas. Evonik’s broader range of pyrolysis oil products includes Purocel™ hydrogenation catalysts for main catalytic beds: Purocel®H100, H200, H300, and H400. These catalysts can remove metals and organic chlorides and reduce olefins and aromatics; their performance is comparable to that of new catalysts. They can be regenerated and reused to support sustainable development, while also saving costs. The refining equipment used to pre-treat pyrolyzed oil feedstocks is also part of the solution. This technology, named “Rocket,” uses sliding rails for installation, and combines custom adsorbents with optimized fluid dynamics to improve purification performance. Complete modular slides can be modified according to customer requirements. Evonik’s continuously expanding portfolio of Purocel™ adsorbents and catalysts, along with the associated pyrolysis oil technology, drives chemical recycling by helping to convert plastic waste into usable products. It diverts potential landfill waste and also allows the use of alternative raw materials to replace fossil-based ones, thereby achieving greater sustainability benefits.
