Major breakthrough! Lummus Achieves Elimination of “Permanently Persistent Chemicals” 2025-04-07 14:18:36 On April 1, 2025, Lummus Technology announced that its demonstration plant for treating perfluoro and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, also known as “permanently persistent chemicals”) had been successfully put into operation and was operating stably. This commercial-scale system combines the advanced technologies of LumaSense and ElementSix (E6) to completely break down PFAS compounds. This technology will assist industrial and municipal water service providers in removing PFAS from water sources, thereby protecting public health and environmental safety. Leonde Bruyn, President and CEO of Loomas Technology, said, “Through our commercial demonstration unit, water treatment operators for drinking water and wastewater can visually observe the decomposition process of PFAS.” The direct operational experience helps operators assess the suitability of the technology for their facility requirements, while also demonstrating the scalable and cost-effective solutions offered by the Lumaris Water team to address the severe environmental challenges posed by PFAS. ” This PFAS treatment demonstration facility is located at Lummus Green Circle Labs in Laporte, Texas. The core of the device is not to modify PFAS chemically so that they can be detected, but rather to directly break the carbon-fluorine bonds in the PFAS pollutants during the treatment process. This device is now available to customers; it can analyze water samples and generate certification data for use by customers in communicating with regulatory authorities to improve water quality. In addition, the technology is now being sold to industrial and municipal water utilities interested in conducting in-situ treatment of PFAS substances. The one-stop PFAS solutions offered by the Rumas water treatment team also include in-house analysis services capable of detecting PFAS at concentrations as low as one trillionth. Such analysis services help water utility operators accurately assess pollution levels and monitor the performance of treatment systems.
