Recently, the demonstration project for the upgraded production of methanol through the comprehensive utilization of new material resources by Zhongtai was put into operation. It is reported that the project covers an area of 1,350 mu and has an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of methanol. It utilizes coal powder, coke dust, and waste gas in a comprehensive and resource-efficient manner to produce methanol, with the aim of improving the level of comprehensive utilization of coal based on its different grades and qualities, as well as of extending the industrial chain and enhancing the value chain. This project represents a million-ton-scale methanol plant in China that is entirely domestically produced and owns its own intellectual property; both the core process packages and equipment are fully domestic, serving as a positive example for the full domestic production of large-scale coal chemical plants. Recently, the first ignition of the Jinhua furnace in Xinjiang Zhongtai New Materials Co., Ltd.’s demonstration project for the upgraded methanol production through comprehensive resource utilization was successful, indicating that the gasification unit is now ready for formal operation. It has entered the trial production phase. The gasification unit of the upgrading demonstration project for methanol production through comprehensive resource utilization at Xinjiang Zhongtai New Materials Co., Ltd. utilizes the water-cooled wall waste boiler gasifier technology for water-coal slurry developed by Beijing Qingchuang Jinhua Technology Co., Ltd. (Jinhua Furnace 3.0). Two in use and one as backup. Vaporization pressure is 6.5 MpaG, and the total gas flow rate is 286,000 Nm³/h (CO+H₂). The construction project for the upgraded demonstration facility for the comprehensive utilization of new material resources in Xinjiang to produce methanol is located in the Tongxin Industrial Park, Alehui Town, Toksun County, Xinjiang. It utilizes the waste gas generated as a by-product of the lignite carbonization plant operated by Zhongtai Group in Toksun County, along with the residues resulting from that process (coke powder and coal dust), as raw materials to build a methanol production facility with an annual capacity of 1 million tons. In September 2022, Zhongtai New Materials underwent a capital increase and share expansion. Zhongtai Chemical and Zhongtai Group invested cash amounts equal to 125 million yuan each into Zhongtai New Materials; Zhongtai Chemical contributed 75 million yuan while Zhongtai Group contributed 50 million yuan. As a result, the registered capital of Zhongtai New Materials was increased to 225 million yuan. 4. Preliminary situation of the project: The upgraded demonstration project for the comprehensive utilization of new material resources in Zhongtai to produce methanol was approved by the Autonomous Region’s Development and Reform Commission in August 2022. Currently, efforts are being made to complete the relevant procedures such as environmental impact assessments, energy assessments, and safety evaluations for the project. Meanwhile, preliminary work is underway, including project design as well as technical discussions and bidding processes for long-term-use equipment and key equipment. III. Significance of the Project and Its Impact on the Company This project is an important part of the company’s modern coal chemical industry plan. It makes full use of the characteristics and advantages of coal chemistry by utilizing the residues generated by the company’s semi-coke production process – namely coal powder and coke dross – as raw materials for gasification in this project. This transforms low-value materials into usable raw materials, thereby increasing their added value and extending the industrial chain. The implementation of this project will help to promote the efficient utilization and transformation of existing local coal processing resources, as well as enhance the development level of the industry focused on the comprehensive utilization of coal at different grades and qualities. At the same time, with the rapid development of the BDO industry in China, it will further support the growth of the methanol market. Once completed, the project will provide raw material supplies for the existing and under-construction BDO projects in Xinjiang, thereby positively contributing to the improvement of the company’s operational efficiency.
On February 10, 2023, Tuoksun County in Xinjiang held a ceremony to mark the resumption of work on major projects for the first quarter of 2023 at the Energy and Heavy Chemical Industry Park. The planned investment amount is 10.101 billion yuan. The ceremony was held at the site of the upgrading demonstration project for the comprehensive utilization of resources to produce methanol by Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. The total investment in Xinjiang Zhongtai’s methanol production project through resource utilization is 6 billion yuan; the project covers an area of 1,350 mu, and its construction period is 24 months. Upon completion of the project, it is expected to generate an annual output value of around 2.3 billion yuan and profits and taxes of 780 million yuan, while creating approximately 800 new job opportunities. The official commencement of construction for this project was announced on September 28, 2022. Work such as project design, procurement of key equipment, and preparation for construction planning has already been carried out. To date, a total investment of 496 million yuan has been made. In the first half of 2023, civil engineering work for various processes will be carried out primarily, while in the second half of 2023, the phase of concurrent civil engineering and installation work will begin, with some auxiliary equipment entering the equipment installation stage. The Xinjiang Zhongtai Comprehensive Resource Utilization Methanol Production Upgrade Demonstration Project uses the waste gas generated as a by-product of the lignite carbonization plant operated by Zhongtai Group in Tuoxun County, along with the residues (coke powder and coal dust), as raw materials to produce 1 million tons of methanol per year. The production facility includes gasification, purification, sulfur recovery, and methanol synthesis units. According to Shanxi Yangmei Chemical Machinery, the gasification process uses 3 Jinhua furnaces, with each furnace being capable of handling 2,500 tons of coal per day. Zhao Yonglu, chief engineer of Zhongtai Group and chairman of Xinjiang Zhongtai New Materials Co., Ltd., explained that the project uses coke slag, coal powder, and waste gas generated as by-products of the lignite carbonization units in the park as raw materials to produce basic chemicals, which are then used as feedstocks for BDO production within Zhongtai Group. These chemicals are further utilized in the development of industries such as textiles and clothing, organic solvents, and biodegradable materials. Achieve the conversion of fuel into raw materials, and of raw materials into materials, thereby fostering a synergistic development of coal chemical and petrochemical industries within the Zhongtai Group.
