【Frontiers in HaiChuan Chemical Technology】Korea’s Cosmesi develops a new type of eco-friendly hot melt adhesive based on the biodegradable material PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates)

Recently, South Korean company COSMAX announced that, through two years of joint research and development with Dongsung Chemical, it has successfully developed a new type of eco-friendly hot melt adhesive based on the biodegradable material PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates). This adhesive will gradually replace the petroleum-based adhesives that are widely used in cosmetic packaging such as air cushions and eyeshadow palettes. For a long time, the petroleum-based hot melt adhesives have been widely used in this industry. Although they possess excellent adhesive properties, they pose significant environmental risks during production and use – not only do they generate high levels of carbon dioxide emissions, but they also produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In contrast, the bio-based hot melt adhesive developed jointly by South Korea’s COSMAX and Dongsung Chemical offers significant environmental advantages: experiments have shown that this material can achieve a biodegradation rate of over 90% within 12 months in natural environments such as soil and oceans, thereby reducing the environmental burden substantially. Korean company COSMAX has initiated a process to replace its products with biodegradable hot melt adhesives, while also establishing technical barriers and exclusive procurement rights to supply these adhesives to customers with relevant needs. As the world’s largest ODM company in the cosmetics industry, South Korean COSMAX established a specialized packaging science laboratory at the end of 2022, with the aim of strengthening its research and development capabilities in eco-friendly containers and packaging materials, thereby further solidifying its leadership in the field of sustainable beauty solutions.
