On December 6, the founding ceremony of the Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (referred to as “Dongguan Materials Institute”), was held in Dongguan, Guangdong. The establishment of this research institute is a major strategic move aimed at accelerating the acquisition of technological leadership in the field of new materials and helping the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area become an internationally influential center for scientific and technological innovation. The Dongguan Institute of Materials is a research institution jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangdong Province, and Dongguan City. It is primarily responsible for exploring strategic and cutting-edge materials as well as conducting research on fundamental scientific issues. It carries out studies in areas such as information materials, energy materials, functional ceramics, and metal materials, with the goal of establishing a new materials research center that has global influence and leadership. According to the information on the official website of the Dongguan Materials Institute, the institute is located in the pilot zone of the comprehensive **science center in the Greater Bay Area (Songshan Lake Science City), with the first phase of the facility covering an area of 263 mu. Led by Academician Wang Weihua, the Dongguan Institute of Materials focuses on three key areas: cutting-edge science in the field of new materials, major industrial needs, and changes in research and development paradigms. Its mission is to address fundamental scientific challenges and critical application issues in this field, as well as to foster the development of new forms of productive capacity. With the aim of establishing new research paradigms in materials science and technology and promoting innovation in future new material technologies, the institute takes advantage of major scientific and technological infrastructure to carry out research on basic and common technologies, as well as applied technology development, for strategically important core materials that are in urgent need, thereby facilitating seamless integration between the innovation chain and the industrial chain. At the same time, the Dongguan Materials Institute will focus on building a high-caliber team of experts in the field of materials as well as advanced platform facilities, aiming to develop a range of key core technologies. It seeks to become a leading research institution in China’s new materials sector, a source of original innovation, a hub for industrial technology development, and a hub for innovative talent.
