Everyone is welcome to participate in the discussion. --------------------------------------------------------- There is an interesting phenomenon in the history of higher education development in Shandong: several universities located in Qingdao were once renamed by adding “Qingdao” to their names, such as Shandong Ocean University, which became Qingdao Ocean University, and Shandong Chemical Industry College, which became Qingdao Chemical Industry College. History of the school’s development: The former Shandong University of Chemical Technology was quite famous; it served as a cradle for training talent in the chemical and rubber industries in Shandong. The history of the school dates back to the Higher Vocational School of Light Industry, founded in Shenyang in 1950. In 1956, the school moved from Shenyang to Qingdao and was renamed Qingdao Rubber Industry School. On this basis, in September 1958, Shandong Institute of Chemical Technology was officially established; its name was inscribed by Mr. Guo Moruo himself, making it the first undergraduate institution in Shandong Province to be named after the chemical industry. Disciplinary Strengths and Industry Status: From its early days, Shandong University of Chemical Technology offered specialized courses such as rubber processing, basic organic synthesis, and chemical engineering machinery. Leveraging its strong strengths in rubber technology and extensive industry experience, the university has trained tens of thousands of top talents for the entire rubber industry in New China – ranging from industry leaders and executives of listed companies like Yuan Zhongxue and Xu Chengqiu, to technical experts and military industry specialists such as Wang Chuansheng and Mou Yanting. Additionally, it has supplied 80% of the senior managers and technical professionals working in tire, rubber machinery, and rubber additive companies across the country. For these reasons, it is known as the “Huangpu of China’s rubber industry”. Over the years of its operation, Shandong Institute of Chemical Engineering has undergone several changes in its administrative affiliation. In 1962, it came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Chemical Industry, and at the same time its educational resources were merged with those of Nanhua Institute of Chemical Engineering, thereby enhancing its academic strength continuously. Batch after batch of outstanding students have left this place to go across the country, becoming key figures in China’s industries such as chemicals, rubber, and materials. In 1984, Shandong Institute of Chemical Technology was renamed Qingdao Institute of Chemical Technology. In 2002, the university was officially renamed Qingdao University of Science and Technology, entering a new stage of development.

The background features the reefs and distant mountains of Qingdao Bay, with the aquarium under renovation faintly visible in the distance. Qingdao University of Science and Technology. Its predecessor was Shenyang Private Wenhui Middle School, which came under the jurisdiction of the Light Industry Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Industry of the People’s Republic of China on September 16, 1950; it was later renamed Shenyang Light Industry Senior Vocational School. “The predecessor of Wenhui Middle School was a free school established in February 1876 by a Presbyterian branch in Scotland; it was the first church school founded by foreigners in Shenyang, and it also served as the predecessor of Qingdao University of Science and Technology (according to historical records). After the Yi School, it was renamed “Wenhui Academy,” with the status of a university. Its chemistry education is among the best in the country; the chemistry laboratories are well-equipped, and each student has access to their own set of instruments and chemicals for experiments. During the Republic of China era, it was one of 23 church-run schools, along with Yenching University, Qilu University, Jinling Women’s University, Jinling University, Dongwu University, Hujiang University, St. John’s University, Zhejiang University… The name “Wenhui” is taken from The Analects of Confucius – Yan Yuan: A gentleman makes friends through literature, and uses those friends to cultivate his virtue. The school motto is Play the game (strive for excellence).
