The instrument control systems in our unit all use the PID algorithm for regulation, but when operating conditions change, the PID parameters need to be optimized. I would like to ask whether this task can be assigned to process operators or process technicians, as they are best aware of the actual operating conditions. Are there any standard requirements or something for this issue? Or in the chemical plants that each of us works at, are PID parameters adjusted by the process engineering team or by the instrumentation team?
We have always adjusted these settings manually through the manufacturing process; however, after stabilization, an adjustment requires a change request to be submitted by the workshop, although the authority to do so has always been available~~~~
In my opinion, if process engineers are to make adjustments, they must understand the meaning of PID parameters, the changes that occur as a result of those adjustments, and how to deal with fluctuations caused by improper adjustments.

It varies from person to person; I once met an experienced worker who had graduated from a technical school, and adjusting this was a piece of cake for him. However, the majority of process engineers on site do not possess this capability.
Process engineers can make adjustments, and changes in the design of the connection devices allow instrumentation specialists to train the operators so that they have the ability to adjust PID parameters. Since process operators are exposed to these aspects on a regular basis, this helps them carry out the adjustments more effectively!

I work in the production workshop; the instrumentation workshop gives me the engineer’s keys or other passwords so that we can make adjustments more conveniently, and also to ensure better results. But this still needs to be kept secret from the operators.
Sure, PID tuning is itself a process of gradual adjustment based on experience; process engineers know the impact of changes in control valves on operations, which allows them to make adjustments more quickly. However, not every process engineer possesses such experience.
There will be few, and even more that won’t understand.
As long as one knows how to adjust it, anyone can do it. However, it is best to have one person in charge of adjusting the PID parameters, otherwise things can get chaotic. PID parameters aren’t greatly affected by process changes, so why do they need to be adjusted frequently?
