The company’s machining workshop purchased a sheet rolling machine the year before last; the control cabinet that came with it was equipped with an Omron PLC along with a touch screen for operation. Last year, while it was in normal use, it suddenly stopped working – the touch screen displayed a system error and suggested contacting the manufacturer. Call the manufacturer; they first verify the customer’s name and then check whether there are any unpaid invoices. Once everything is confirmed to be in order, they provide a password which the user enters on the touch screen, and thus the fault is resolved. It has been in use for over a year, and now it no longer works. The touchscreen shows a PLC fault, along with a phone number to contact. I called right away, and they said the PLC’s battery is dead; they asked me to take the PLC apart and send it to them, with a replacement cost of 300 yuan. I’m not sure if it can be disassembled; I thought I’d just buy a new battery and replace it myself. The other party said that we can’t do that as it will damage the software. I didn’t believe it, so I removed the battery; it was a 3V lithium battery. When I measured its voltage, it was 2.98V. Only then did I realize I had been scammed; it was a Trojan program they set up to take money from us on a regular basis. These manufacturers don’t bother thinking about how to improve product and service quality; they focus their efforts on such things instead. It’s really terrible. As a reminder, if you purchase similar equipment in the future, be sure to have the manufacturer provide the PLC and touch screen programs along with the passwords, just to be safe.
