Flow meters, also known as flow gauges, include common types such as electromagnetic flow meters, vortex street flow meters, float flow meters, Coriolis mass flow meters, thermal (gas) mass flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters, and turbine flow meters. It is mainly applied in industrial production processes, energy metering, environmental protection projects, transportation, biotechnology, scientific experiments, marine meteorology, rivers and lakes, and other fields. However, due to carelessness in the steps and methods of using the flow meter, or improper use, certain faults can occur. To minimize such problems, it is important to pay attention to the following points when using it. 1. The flow meter must be installed vertically with an inclination of no more than 2°; otherwise, it will affect the accuracy of the measurements. 2. Before installing the flow meter, it is essential to clean the weld slag and debris from inside the pipeline. 3. To ensure the measurement accuracy of the rotameter, a straight pipe section of at least 10DN should be provided at the inlet side of the meter, and one of at least 5DN at the outlet side. The control valve used for adjustment during measurement must be installed downstream of the meter. 4. If the medium to be measured is dirty or contains magnetic particles, a filter or magnetic filter should be installed upstream of the flow meter. 5. If the medium under measurement is a highly pulsating flow or a two-phase flow, a buffer should be installed upstream of the flow meter to eliminate or reduce these pulsations and ensure that the flow is single-phase and stable. It is also recommended to use a damper-type flow meter. 6. The flow meter should be installed in such a way as to properly support the vibrations of the pipeline or reduce the axial load on the flow meter; otherwise, additional supports for fixing the flow meter should be provided. 7. Before using electric remote transmission flow meters equipped with alarm limit switches, open the instrument cover and connect the wires correctly according to the wiring diagram. For the screws at the alarm-type loosening limit switch, the user sets the limit alarm position as required, tightens the screws, and then uses it once it has been restored to its normal state. 8. When a flow meter is used for gas measurement, it is necessary to ensure that the operating pressure in the pipeline is at least 5 times the pressure loss of the flow meter, so that the flow meter can function stably and properly. 9. If a rotameter is turned on, and there is no pressure in the pipeline or the system has not reached the operating pressure required for the meter to function properly, the control valve must be opened slowly until the system is in proper condition; otherwise, this can cause the pointer to fluctuate or the rotor to collide suddenly, resulting in damage. 10. To facilitate the maintenance of flow meters, the cleaning of magnetic filters, and the regular upkeep of user pipelines, it is recommended to use a bypass pipeline. 11. When in use, if the density of the fluid being measured differs from that of water, or if the parameters and operating conditions of the gas being measured differ from those specified by the manufacturer, it is necessary to convert the readings indicated by the flow meter. 12. Follow the warning signs on the instrument indicator to remove the components that prevent rotor vibration during transportation; restore the instrument to its normal state before using it again. Flow measurement is widely used in various fields such as industrial and agricultural production, national defense construction, scientific research, foreign trade, and people’s daily lives.
