Differences in the use of 316 and 316L stainless steels

Composition: 316 – C≤0.08, Si≤1.00, Mn≤2.00, P≤0.035, S≤0.03; Ni: 10.0–14.0, Cr: 16.0–18.5, Mo: 2.0–3.0. 316L – C≤0.03, Si≤1.00, Mn≤2.00, P≤0.035, S≤0.03; Ni: 10.0–14.0, Cr: 16.0–18.5, Mo: 2.0–3.0. The only difference lies in the carbon content. I would appreciate it if experts could advise on how to use these two grades of stainless steel in oil refineries
316 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo: Due to the addition of Mo, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, resistance to atmospheric corrosion, and high-temperature strength, allowing it to be used in harsh conditions； Excellent work hardening property (non-magnetic). Equipment used in seawater for producing items via chemicals, dyes, papermaking processes, oxalic acid, fertilizers, and other means ； Photography, food industry, facilities in coastal areas, ropes, CD poles, bolts, nuts. 316L 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo low-carbon, as part of the low-C series of 316 steel grades, possesses excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in addition to sharing the same properties as 316 steel. Among the applications of 316 steel, there are products that require special resistance to intergranular corrosion.
316L is primarily valued for its corrosion resistance at weld points, whereas 316 tends to develop rust at those areas. Additionally, I came across in my recent work another special grade of 316L, namely – urea-grade 316L. It involves adjusting the levels of certain elements in 316L to enhance its corrosion resistance.
So why, in high-pressure hydrogenation units, when CF8M is used as the material for the valve body of high-pressure control valves, is it required that the carbon content be no less than 0.04 if the operating temperature is above 385°C?
