What does it mean to install a separate SIS system? Do I need to install a separate instrument control system?
An independent SIS refers to one that is separate from the DCS system. There are some devices that are not very dangerous; they are not connected to the SIS system and instead use only the DCS system. In a few cases, the interlocks are implemented directly within the DCS system, allowing control as well as interlocking functions to be carried out through the DCS system. Devices that are important or pose a high risk are not allowed; DCS and SIS must be installed separately.
The SIS system, or Safety Instrumented System, is a system that must be installed in locations where high safety standards are required. It is an independent system from the DCS; its control signals, data acquisition signals, and cables are all separate, and together with its reliable hardware, it serves to ensure safe operation. SIS is like a hyper-sensitive person; any slight disturbance at the scene that touches its sensitive nerves results in an immediate reaction! Cut off ; Slap! Isolation ; Slap! Stop. In short, going on SIS prevents production, but it is extremely safe.
