I would like to ask: when using a orifice plate flow meter to measure steam at 200°C and 0.9 MPA, will installing the orifice plate near the elbow section cause significant noise? The steam pipeline is a 630mm pipe with a flow rate of around 60 t/h. There is a lot of noise during operation now. Has anyone encountered a similar situation?
Is this flow meter installed upstream or downstream of the elbow? Installing it upstream of a bend may result in noise due to the turbulence and swirling of the fluid; the proper installation location is on a straight section of pipe, with a straight section length of typically 10 pipe diameters – for specific details, consult the flow meter manufacturer

This straight pipe section is far from sufficient; typically, manufacturers require 20D in front and 10D at the back to ensure proper performance. Of course, different meter brands may have slight differences in requirements; it depends on what brand you are using.

Several colleagues mentioned the issue of insufficient straight pipe sections, but in actual installation, the requirements specified in the manufacturer’s calculations are what take precedence. For balance orifice flow meters, the requirements for straight pipe sections are actually quite low. For example, in a project I’m working on, there was a 5-inch pipeline carrying a liquid at 4.5 MPa; the requirement was that the straight pipe section ahead of the orifice plate be 0.4 meters long, and that behind it it be 0.1 meter long; A 3.2MPa gas medium pipeline with a diameter of 4 inches; the inlet to the orifice plate is at 0.3m, and the outlet is at 0.1m ; For a 1.0 MPa, 180°C superheated steam pipe with a diameter of 6 inches, the required length is 0.5 meters at the inlet and 0.2 meters at the outlet; of course, in practice it is desirable to have a longer length as much as possible
