Hello everyone in the oil and gas industry, who are all working in the control systems sector. I have a question: when a new project comes along, how do we determine whether to use a PLC system or a DCS system? There is definitely a big difference here. As we all know, both DCS and PLC are control systems. The advantage of DCS is for large-scale control systems, while the advantage of PLC is for small or medium-scale control systems. 2 Nowadays, PLCs and DCS systems are expanding into each other’s domains; DCS now includes small-scale control systems, while PLCs have large-scale control systems as well. In terms of reliability and stability, the products in these two fields are of decent quality and suitable for use in various projects. The only difference lies in which option is more cost-effective and better suited for a particular project. So for us in the industrial control field, when we receive a project, how do we choose the control system – PLC or DCS? How should we make this decision, and what criteria should we use? We would appreciate guidance from experts in this field. .
In my personal opinion, for projects under 200 points, a PLC is still a viable option; otherwise, there is no price advantage compared to domestic DCS systems. Especially when software like winCC is particularly expensive. Large-scale control systems are generally DCS. In small-scale applications, there is no significant functional difference between DCS and PLC. So it’s best to consider cost-effectiveness.
