Flow meters are the most important and widely used instrument types in industrial production. In such environments, it is common to have to measure liquids that are corrosive, and special attention must be paid to the corrosion resistance of the flow meters themselves when dealing with such liquids. If proper care is not taken before and after using a flow meter, it is likely to become corroded, rendering it unusable. This can manifest in the following ways: 1. The key components of the flow measurement instrument suffer from corrosion by corrosive substances over time, which alters their geometric dimensions and reduces the accuracy of the instrument. For example, in a vortex flow meter, if the vortex generator is corroded by the fluid, its width decreases and the surface facing the flow becomes rougher, which in turn causes a change in the flow coefficient. Even plug-in ultrasonic flowmeters, which are less affected by corrosive media, often experience weakened transmission and reception signals due to the pitted interior surfaces of the metal tubes caused by corrosion, and in severe cases lose their sensitivity. 2. Corrosive media can cause corrosion of the key components of flow measurement instruments that are in direct contact with the medium, leading to damage and even loss of function. For example, corrosion of the electrodes in an electromagnetic flowmeter can cause the medium to leak, leading to the burnout of the outer layer of the excitation wire. 3. Corrosion can have a significant impact on the lifespan of instruments; if not addressed, it can cause some measuring instruments to lose their functionality prematurely. For example, in some special situations, using corrosion-resistant materials throughout is too costly; therefore, corrosion-resistant materials are used for the key measuring components, while process connections such as flanges are made of ordinary corrosion-resistant or non-corrosion-resistant materials. After a few years of use, these process connections get damaged. 4. Corrosive media can reduce the safety protection capabilities of instruments and meters, and in severe cases, may even lead to safety accidents. Leaks of corrosive substances, if not detected and addressed in a timely manner, can also easily lead to safety and personal accidents. Therefore, to ensure the accuracy of its measurements, it needs to be maintained regularly; care must not be taken lightly. As a highly precise instrument, a flow meter requires strict adherence to its specifications not only during manufacturing and use, but also requires special attention during maintenance in order to prevent it from reaching the end of its useful life prematurely.
