I have a question: Are instrumentation and automation the same field in design institutes?

Instrumentation and automatic control are often mentioned together, but in my opinion they are not the same field. Instrumentation involves things such as instrument specification sheets, cable lists, installation diagrams, as well as diagrams related to power and gas supply for instruments, etc. Automatic control, on the other hand, includes things like layout plans for control rooms, PLC cabinet diagrams, wiring diagrams, and so on. This is how I understand it; I’m not sure if it’s correct. I welcome feedback from those with more experience. Thank you
I can tell you responsibly that it’s not right.
It is a profession. However, the PLC cabinet diagrams and wiring diagrams (for the cabinet area) are provided by the control system manufacturer.
If a factory’s DCS is used, the drawings are indeed provided by the factory; whereas if a commonly used PLC such as Siemens is used, the drawings still need to be created by oneself
Together it’s called the Instrumentation and Control specialty; the boss wants one person to do the work of two, ideally handling electrical tasks as well too. Which design firm? And there’s this good thing too
It are two different specialties, but it’s the same group of people; in our department, different tasks are signed off as different job types. I’m in charge of the instruments, I’m in charge of automatic control, and I’m also in charge of instrument control. It seems there are other job descriptions as well, but they’re not needed for current projects.

As the company grows, it might be divided into two groups; however, typical design institutes do not do this and have all the members working together. The same is true for manufacturing enterprises.
It’s the same thing, just one type of job task. Of course, one doesn’t want to do more work; there are still ways to find reasons not to.
