During the initial installation of the turbine flowmeter, a pair of pressure taps are installed on the pipe walls 2 times the diameter of the pipe upstream and downstream of the flowmeter; these taps can be connected to a differential pressure gauge when necessary. While the flowmeter is in operation, the relationship between the value indicated by the flowmeter and the value indicated by the differential pressure gauge is recorded. If everything is normal at this stage, this relationship is used as a basis for checking whether the flowmeter is functioning properly in the future. Today, our technical editor will explain to you what causes the decrease in the accuracy of turbine flowmeters. 1. A harsh working environment, such as electromagnetic interference, dust, high temperatures, vibrations, and humidity, can lead to improper operation or failure of the turbine flow sensor, which in turn results in errors in the readings provided by the turbine flowmeter. These errors can be positive or negative; they may not be noticeable, or the flowmeter may completely stop functioning. Regarding the aforementioned phenomenon, when it is relatively severe, issues can be identified by comparing the working status of the processes, making it easier to take appropriate measures. However, in the early stages of the problem, no special measures can be taken to detect it. 2. Media generally contain some impurities, which cause wear on the bearings and shafts, increasing the gap between them. This disrupts the dynamic balance of the moving parts, resulting in a decrease in rotational speed. Additionally, dirt that enters this gap increases the mechanical resistance, further leading to a reduction in rotational speed. All these reasons lead to a decrease in the instrument readings, resulting in negative errors, which is unfavorable for the fluid supplier. 3. Changes in fluid temperature and pressure can cause the air contained within the liquid in the pipeline to escape; or, if the pressure inside the pipeline is lower than the saturated vapor pressure of the fluid, part of the liquid may turn into vapor. Additionally, negative pressure in the system can draw external gases into the pipeline, and these gases move along with the liquid being measured, resulting in an increased reading on the instruments and thus a positive error, which is detrimental to those who rely on that fluid. 4. Fibrous or viscous impurities in the fluid adhere to the rotating parts of the flow meter, increasing the rotational resistance and resulting in a decrease in the instrument’s reading, which leads to negative errors and is detrimental to the fluid supplier.
