Portable TVOC detectors are primarily used for on-site TVOC testing. Their key component is the PID sensor, which is a highly sensitive device; therefore, proper maintenance, storage, use, and calibration are necessary to fully utilize the advantages of these portable TVOC detectors. 1 Storage of the detector: For portable TVOC detectors, it is often necessary to store them in a specific environment to prevent contamination by high concentrations of TVOC. Such detectors should be kept in a sealed plastic bag that does not release TVOC, thereby preventing the bag from contaminating the detector itself. Additionally, one or two small desiccant packs should be included to protect the detector from damage caused by humidity. If the probe is not used for an extended period of time, it is essential to remove the battery from it, to prevent situations such as leakage that could cause irreversible damage to the probe. Many customers who have used this product have experienced leakage issues. For customers in the southern regions, who often use the products in high-humidity environments, storage may cause the sensor’s calibration curve to shift, resulting in a longer stabilization time being required. Re-calibration and a longer warm-up time are required to minimize the impact of storage in a high-humidity environment. If a portable TVOC detector is not used for an extended period of time, it may become contaminated, resulting in fluctuations in the TVOC readings. Therefore, during actual use by the customer, a longer preheating time is required to achieve better accuracy. 2 Preheating before use: In actual use, the preheating time is determined by the conditions of use. For most customers, a preheating time of 10 to 20 minutes is sufficient for the portable TVOC detector to be ready for use. However, those who do not use the device for extended periods may need a longer preheating time. In environments with high humidity, an even longer preheating time is required. For use in the short term, it may only take a few minutes to complete the warming-up process. However, it is important to note that once the TVOC reading displayed on the screen turns black, it is best to wait until the data fluctuations become minimal before starting data collection. 3 Calibration of the probe: For the calibration of TVOC probes, it is necessary to consider the frequency of use by the customer as well as the operating environment. To calibrate the probe, a calibration chamber must be purchased separately, along with standard gases obtained from gas suppliers. If the sensor is used for detecting low concentrations in a clean environment, the calibration frequency can be reduced to once a week or at longer intervals (but not more than every 30 days). Before calibrating the TVOC sensor, it must be powered on for at least 20 minutes to warm up; insufficient warming up can result in inaccurate readings from the sensor after calibration. Before preparing for calibration, it should be ensured that the reading fluctuations are minimal. A slight fluctuation in the reading before calibration is normal, but it should not show an upward or downward trend. 4. Methods for dealing with contamination: In practical use, if the device is operated for extended periods in environments with high concentrations or high humidity, in order to achieve better accuracy and stability, it is necessary to keep the PID sensor running for a long time. During this prolonged operation, the PID sensor continues to function, and the detector carries out self-cleaning; as a result, the baseline value decreases and stabilizes. If the TVOC detector needs to run for an extended period of time, the probe must remain powered on. The probe can be connected to laptops running the WolfSense software, WolfPack, AdvancedSensePRO, AdvancedSense, tablets, etc., and these devices can be charged using an AC adapter. It is best to run it continuously for over 12 hours to check the probe’s response and whether its sensitivity is normal. It should be noted that. Excessive contamination may require a longer pre-burning time (over 48 hours), or the replacement of the PID lamp, or even the PID sensor itself. If the sensor continues to respond slowly after prolonged use, it is necessary to return the instrument to the manufacturer so that the repair center can provide advice.
