The internet is full of copied and pasted content; even after reading it, I’m still confused. As a beginner, I understand that a dew point meter is used to measure the moisture in the air, right? Why is the unit temperature? For example, in the data sheet of the dew point meter for the project I’m working on this time, the range is from -20 degrees to 80 degrees Td. What does this mean? Could the experts explain it in simpler terms?
The reading obtained by a dew point meter should be understood as follows: in an environment with a lower temperature, water evaporates, which indicates that the moisture content is low; whereas in an environment with a higher temperature, water evaporates as well, indicating that the moisture content is relatively high at higher temperatures. This is a degree of data based on comparison. Your instrument’s range is -20 degrees; choose the appropriate option accordingly, as water content at -50 degrees is virtually non-existent. There are also high-temperature, moisture-free dry gases. It’s recommended to read the instructions; then you’ll understand.
There is water in the air; the dew point meter has a glass-like element. As the temperature drops, the water in the air condenses, and the temperature at which this condensation occurs is the dew point measured by the dew point meter. So, the less water in the air, the lower temperature required for my dew point meter to produce dew, right? It’s my own understanding; I haven’t done any research – I’ve only seen a dew point meter once.

First, you need to understand the concept of dew point. The dew point is the highest temperature at which a gas can condense into a liquid state; in other words, it is the temperature at which the gas can just turn into a liquid. Therefore, the unit used is naturally temperature. The higher the humidity, that is, the greater the partial pressure of water in the gas phase, the easier it is for condensation to occur, meaning the dew point is higher. So my understanding of a dew point meter is that it measures the dew point of water in the current gas phase, which indirectly reflects the humidity of that gas phase. The concept of dew point is that as the temperature continues to drop, liquid droplets begin to form at a certain temperature, and this temperature is the dew point of the sample in question.
