What are the principles for selecting valve components?

I’ve been studying the air circuit diagram in the factory recently and have understood part of it. I hadn’t noticed a problem until now. That is, based on what principles are components such as valves, cylinders, as well as the solenoid valves, pneumatically controlled valves, and positioners chosen? (Is it pressure?) ) Are there any books that cover this topic?
That’s a big problem. It’s the price, quality and brand, performance, material, operating conditions, and so on – there are simply too many factors to consider. Of course, real-world projects don’t need to be that complex, but there are indeed many factors involved.
