Do glass tube level gauges tend to rupture due to thermal expansion and contraction? Or could it be that the tube bursts due to the different expansion coefficients of the glass tube and the outer metal material? In short, how should one choose a solution to address this problem?
Glass tube level gauges can be selected based on the actual needs of a company, considering factors such as light transmittance, chemical resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance, and coefficient of expansion.
If it is used normally, the problem you mentioned should not occur. In many cases, the damage to glass tube level gauges is mainly caused by improper use. The premise itself is applicable to this type of level gauge.
The main issue with this phenomenon lies in installation; whenever replacement is necessary, it is crucial that the gasket used does not age, and that the packing gland be centered when tightening, with a certain gap remaining between it and the glass tube. Do not tighten too much. During tightening, gradually open the valve to pressurize and tighten under pressure, ensuring no leaks. Most of this damage is caused by installation issues. If possible, consider replacing it with a flip-type level gauge. (For reference)
Now, in glass tube level gauges, the glass tubes are often replaced with high-temperature resin tubes or acid- and alkali-resistant resin tubes, which are also transparent; choose the appropriate type depending on the medium being used. The coefficients of thermal expansion and contraction are better for glass. Of course, when installing it, ensure a good seal while still leaving enough clearance. Ensure that thermal expansion causes deformation and leads to medium leakage. The above are all my own one-sided understandings, meant only as a reference.
If the tube bursts, it’s definitely due to an incorrect selection. I’ve used many glass tube level gauges, and they have never burst as a result of thermal expansion and contraction
