How should instrument technicians plan their careers?

I’ve been working with instrumentation for four or five years now; my daily tasks are mostly repetitive, I don’t get exposed to new knowledge, and there’s basically no room for advancement. Although it’s possible to gain experience, there’s still too little of it. Sometimes I think that I can’t stay working at the grassroots level for the rest of my life; the company is not that big, and it might be phased out in a few years. I need to figure out which areas are worth focusing on for development.
I’m not specialized in instrumentation, but I’ve had some exposure to it in my work. It seems there are many different types of instruments, and selecting, installing, and tuning them requires careful consideration based on the actual conditions at the site and relevant parameters. New types of instruments keep appearing from time to time. Good instrument engineers are highly valued in the production facilities – just my personal opinion.
