The safety instrumented system is only a part of the safety functions in process safety!

An accident occurred; some people are complaining about the safety instrument systems – why don’t they work, given all the money that was spent on them? In fact, in process manufacturing, the safety functions of the safety instrumented system are only a part of the overall safety functions. To reduce various risks to acceptable levels, everyone is familiar with the onion model, which encompasses a range of safety measures ranging from inherently safe design to instrument systems, safety valves, and enclosures. For each accident scenario, keeping the risks within an acceptable range also involves the implementation of various safety measures; in fact, the use of safety instrument system circuits is not considered at first. This is all covered in HAZOP analysis. Furthermore, the safety instrument system also does not function in the case of non-plot-related accidents. The simplest scenario is that the equipment corrodes rapidly, ruptures and leaks at the thinned areas, and fires or explosions occur due to static electricity; in such cases, safety instruments simply do not have enough time to function. So, don’t complain about the safety instrument system unless there’s a problem.
