With ten years of experience as an instrument technician, I am in charge of the maintenance of control systems for steam turbine units and generator sets. The peripheral instruments are primarily used for monitoring systems related to air separation, compression units, synthesis processes, steam pipelines, purification processes, conversion processes, boiler feedwater, distillation, sulfur recovery, and loading systems. I’m a newcomer in the field of instrumentation; I’ve been working in this area for just over a year now. I’d like to learn more about control systems, as I think it will help me understand the entire field more systematically. However, I’m not sure where to start – for example, I’m not very proficient with even basic PLC systems. Does anyone have any advice for me?
Whether it is an on-site PLC or a DCS, they are both control systems based on logical structures. On-site PLCs are relatively simpler; those commonly used these days are from the Siemens series, and their function blocks are basic in nature. Therefore, while understanding the logical control circuits, it is necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the functions of these function blocks as well as to be familiar with the software and hardware configuration of the entire PLC system.
I hope experts can share more of their experience regarding the maintenance of control systems for steam turbines and generator sets.
