The oval gear flow meter (also known as a displacement flow meter or gear flow meter) belongs to the category of positive displacement flow meters, and it is one of the types with high accuracy among flow measurement instruments. It uses mechanical measuring elements to continuously divide the fluid into individual, known volume portions, and measures the total volume flow rate based on the number of times each volume portion is filled and emptied in the metering chamber. Elliptical gear flowmeters can be manufactured from various materials (cast iron, cast steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel) and are suitable for flow measurement in industries such as chemicals, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, power generation, metallurgy, and food processing.

Water and some light solvents have low viscosity and no self-lubricating ability, and when such media flow through these meters, it may cause a phenomenon similar to dry friction in the mechanical components of the elliptical gears, thereby affecting the operation of these components, especially the interlocking teeth. If it is necessary to calibrate the oval gear flow meter using water, it is recommended to add a small amount of an egg-white-like substance to the water to enhance its self-lubricating properties. However, the helical gear flow meter is of the positive-displacement type and is strictly calibrated upon leaving the factory; there is no need for you to conduct further calibration using water. It is better to use the medium being measured for calibration, by using a tank or large container with accurate measurement capabilities.
