What is the difference between DCS and SIS? Are there any differences in terms of working principle and system structure?
Simply put, DCS is a distributed control system; it functions similarly to a PLC for performing logical control; SIS is a safety instrument system that operates independently of DCS; it has dedicated instruments for providing signals aimed at ensuring safety, and in the event of a fault, it sends signals to DCS to shut down the system
DCS (Distributed Control System) and SIS (Safety Instrumented System) are two different systems in the field of industrial automation, and they differ in terms of working principles and system architecture. 1. Working principle: DCS is primarily used to achieve automatic monitoring, control, and optimization of production processes. It can collect various types of real-time data, process this data, and generate control commands, thereby managing the production process.
DCS is a discrete control system, primarily operated by the operator. The SIS safety interlock system provides safety protection; under normal circumstances, no human intervention is required, and manual intervention is only needed in special situations, such as bypassing or resetting the system. DCS provides conventional control and can also handle some simple interlocks; the SIS system has higher requirements, with explicit specifications for processing speed and signal redundancy. A HAZOP analysis is conducted on the device, and a SIL rating is assigned; any device with a SIL rating of 1 or higher must be equipped with an SIS system.
DCS is equivalent to process control and can be operated; SIS is a safety interlock and cannot be operated.
The difference is quite significant; DCS must have a SIS, but it’s not necessarily the case for others
SIS is also a type of DCS; it is a specialized system designed for safety purposes and used to handle emergency situations, while DCS is responsible for routine control.
