If you are not familiar with a DCS and cannot make flexible use of its various functions to implement optimal configuration strategies, then you will end up spending all your time learning the *process! What do people think of this way of working! !

Understanding the manufacturing process is essential. However, DCS is my own field of expertise.
For example, you might have great ideas, but if you can’t even use Excel, how can you create charts? The tool is the industry itself, and it is also necessary to understand the manufacturing process. In comparison, I still think that not even being able to use the tools needed to eat by oneself is a sign of incompetence
OP, tell your story: did someone make you learn the craft, or were it your colleagues who focused on the craft rather than DCS?
Personally, I think DCS should have a dedicated engineer for this task; that title is too limited. If a factory is being built from scratch and DCS hardware is purchased, then software configuration is necessarily included. If one were to buy only the hardware without having the manufacturer handle the configuration, that would indeed be impressive! Next, once installation and commissioning are complete and formal production begins, will the DCS still need to be modified frequently? You just need to understand the logic, be able to adjust the hardware configuration, modify the roll call system, and use some of the common functions. Most of the work still involves instruments; if a company separates the instruments from the DCS, it’s really wasting money
I agree with what was said upstairs about my colleagues... DCS configuration is part of one’s regular duties. Familiarity with the process is not required. Why are you learning craftsmanship? Can you still outperform those who specialize in chemical engineering processes? I don’t believe it. Do your own job well. It's sufficient to have some understanding of the material properties. Understanding the various applications, configurations, and interlocks in DCS is what a instrumentation engineer should do
Changes to the DCS configuration are mostly carried out during the later stages of construction, during commissioning and startup; there’s little need to make such changes later on. However, due to differences in the process, there are hardly any issues with the system itself. But if the instrumentation personnel don’t understand the process, then it becomes difficult to carry out this work
One still needs to understand the manufacturing processes, and one’s core job duties must be performed excellently
What I despise the most are those control engineers who spend time on computers; it’s just DCS after all – you can get started in a day or two, and within a month you can become an expert.
