These parameters are determined during the engineering design phase. It is important to have reliable analysis of the coal type in order to determine the grindability index of the raw coal; this information is needed to decide on the size of the grinders. The number of grinders required depends on the number of gasification furnaces in the gasification unit as well as the amount of coal fed into them. If there are fewer gasification furnaces, it is usually sufficient for the grinders to handle 75% of the total load of the gasification unit during normal operation. As for the treatment of black water, the design of sedimentation tanks and ash water tanks is crucial; generally, sedimentation tanks should be large enough to facilitate sedimentation and reduce the turbidity of the ash water.
