I found it on Baidu; I hope it will be useful to you. Coal is an important raw material for the chemical industry. Using coal as fuel is not only a great waste, but the sulfur-containing compounds in bituminous coal (such as FeS2) release SO2 gas when burned, causing environmental pollution. Consider a large city with 600,000 households, where each household burns 5 kg of coal per day. This coal contains 2.4% sulfur, and when burned, 90% of that sulfur is converted into sulfur dioxide, which is released into the atmosphere. Question: (1) How many kilograms of SO2 can be produced by burning 1 ton of coal? (2) If this city uses all of the aforementioned coal as fuel, how many tons of sulfur dioxide will be emitted into the atmosphere each year (based on 365 days)? For the first question, the mass of sulfur in 1 ton of coal is 1000*2.4% = 240 kg. Therefore, the mass of SO2 produced is (240*90%)*64/32 = 432 kg. For the second question, the city consumes 600000*5 = 3000 tons of coal per day. Since 1 ton of coal produces 432 kg of SO2, the daily emission of SO2 is 432*3000 = 1296000 kg. Over a year, this amounts to 1296000*365 = 473040000 kg
Okay, thank you. I expressed myself incorrectly; haha. I plan to ask how to calculate the sulfur dioxide content in the exhaust gases, aside from coke, after the dry distillation of one ton of coal. I want to use this information to determine whether the desulfurization system used in coke ovens is efficient enough. Thank you
