Why copper should not be used as the material for the condensate discharge plug of coal gas pipes in basements.
There may be condensate in the gas pipes in the basement, and this condensate contains corrosive substances such as free ammonia. When copper plugs come into contact with ammonia, they eventually rust. This is why none of the ammonia valves used in coke ovens have copper cores; they are all made of cast iron or stainless steel
