The gasification unit of the second phase of Inner Mongolia HuiNeng Coal Chemical Co., Ltd.’s coal-to-natural gas project, with an output of 1.2 billion m3 per year, utilizes three multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasifiers operating at 6.5 MPa and with a diameter of 4000 mm (2 in operation and 1 as backup). Each gasifier is designed to produce 247,500 Nm3 of useful gas per hour. The facility includes three sets for coal slurry preparation, three sets for gasification, three sets for gas washing, three sets for slag treatment, one ash water tank, two clarification tanks, and two sets for vacuum filtration. These gasifiers represent the highest gas production capacity per unit among those in use worldwide, and they are the only ones that employ water-coal slurry gasification technology for coal-to-natural gas production. Phase 1 of this project features a single-nozzle gasification unit with a capacity of 400 million m3/year; the effective gas (CO+H2) output per furnace is 100,000 Nm3/h, while the effective gas (CO+H2) output of the entire unit is 200,000 Nm3/h. There are 2 gasification furnaces in operation and 1 as a backup ; Phase 2: 1.2 billion m3/year multi-nozzle gasification unit. Effective gas (CO+H2) production per furnace: 247,500 Nm3/h; effective gas (CO+H2) production of the entire unit: 495,000 Nm3/h. Two gasification furnaces are in operation while one is on standby. Project Overview: The total estimated investment for the Inner Mongolia HuiNeng coal-to-natural gas project is 12 billion yuan, with construction taking place in two phases. The first phase of the project was designed to produce 400 million Nm3 of coal-to-natural gas and its liquefaction products per year; construction began in April 2010, and successful commissioning took place in October 2014, with a total of 2.36 billion Nm3 of natural gas produced to date. The continuation project was fully launched in 2018, building on the experience gained from the first phase of construction and operation, as well as through further optimization of processes and innovation in technology. It is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by July 2021. By then, the total production capacity for coal-to-natural gas is expected to reach 1.6 billion m3 per year, with LNG production amounting to 1.1 million tons per year. Each year, it can process 5.5–6 million tons of coal, creating over 2,000 job opportunities for society. The coal-to-natural gas project of Inner Mongolia Huineng Coal-Electricity Group Corporation is located in the Shengyuan Coal Chemical Industry Base in Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos City. The project produces synthetic natural gas and liquefied natural gas using coal as raw material. It is the first demonstration project for coal-to-natural gas production in China to be invested in and constructed by a private enterprise. The construction of this project is carried out in two phases: Phase 1 required an investment of around 7 billion yuan; it began operations in October 2014, with all 400 million cubic meters of natural gas being liquefied ; The second-phase natural gas liquefaction project (LNG) is a load-driven natural gas liquefaction plant. The planned investment for this project is 12 billion yuan; the construction will include natural gas purification, liquefaction, storage of liquefied natural gas, transportation, as well as related supporting facilities. It will enable an additional production capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters of coal-derived natural gas, all of which will be liquefied, with a processing capacity of 2.7 million Nm3 of natural gas per day. Operation is expected to begin in 2021.
